The Yo soy un Gamer Academy impacts thousands of Puerto Rican students
For four weeks, from June 15 to July 17, 2023, “Yo Soy un Gamer,” led by Frankie “Hambo” López (TGA Class of 2020) and Juan “Machiche” Santiago, participated in the “Verano Educativo SuperARTE 2023” initiative of the Puerto Rico Department of Education with the “Yo Soy un Gamer Academy” (YSUGA). YSUGA is an educational program focused on entrepreneurship in the video game industry.
This program made a significant impact on thousands of Puerto Rican students across the island by covering topics related to content creation in gaming, as well as the gaming and esports industries. Students from public schools in Puerto Rico, aged between 10 and 18, received a visual, practical, and educational experience that delved into the essential principles of becoming an entrepreneur, content creator, video game developer, and esports player. Throughout this program, thousands of students learned about the fundamentals of gaming in the digital world, smart monetization, the challenges of social media, 21st-century technology, and what it means to be an esports player.
The educational experience was divided into two classes related to the video game industry. The first class, “Gaming is Entrepreneurship,” covered topics such as the opportunities for entrepreneurship within the video game industry, from the perspectives of content creators, video game developers, and player-athletes within the esports industry. The class touched on subjects like gaming as a profession, maintaining a balance between social life, family, and school, the importance of online attitude and presentation, smart and secure monetization, and more.
In the second educational class, “Conducta Esports,” students had their initial exposure to esports education, with a strong emphasis on sportsmanship. They learned about what it takes to be a high-performance esports player, the significance of training and healthy living, and the history of esports. The second part of this class gave all students the chance to become esports players for a day. They learned and played Rocket League on Xbox, starting with tutorials and modules, followed by friendly 1v1 competitions, and concluding the day with a competitive tournament among all students, providing them with their first competitive esports experience. It’s worth noting that this experience was conducted in collaboration with certified trainers from the Esports Coaching Academy, who have been valuable partners and collaborators of “Yo Soy un Gamer” and YSUGA.
